Essential Mix Shows

We now have Every Radio 1 Essential Mix ever produced from 1993 - present day, which is hosted by Pete Tong. It has been a massive effort to collect these sets, but they are now all available from the collection above.

The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show broadcast on BBC Radio 1 and features all styles of electronic dance music. Originally the brainchild of Eddie Gordon, the producer of the show from the very first broadcast in 1993 to 2001. After receiving weekly mix shows from DJs Tony Humphries and Frankie Knuckles on 2 hour cassettes from New York's Hot 97 and KISS 100 respectively in the early 90s Eddie felt that a BBC Radio 1 weekly show with DJs of different styles of music would offer more variety and the chance for the ever burgeoning UK dance music scene to flourish. He further encouraged the DJs he scheduled to flex their musical knowledge muscles by pushing the fact that the DJs were not strictly playing to a dance floor but to people listening in their homes all over the world.

Hence the need for a straight out "4 to the floor" mix for 2 hours was not totally necessary and the DJs could include more eclectic music. DJ Paul Oakenfold particularly benefited from this direction prompted by Eddie Gordon to create the now famous Goa Mix which was not only voted the best Essential Mix ever but also won a Silver Award in the Specialist Music Programme category at the 1997 Sony Radio Awards. The previous year, 1996, the Essential Mix Show picked up the award of Radio Show Of The Year from Muzik Magazine. Later on it was David Holmes who created another 2 legendary hours in the history of the Essential Mix: His set on 15 June 1997 – a surprising journey from Nancy Wilson to Jimi Hendrix – redefined the DJ as a collector of musical history.

The show has been hosted since its conception in 1993 by DJ Pete Tong who was also the first performer, broadcast on 30 October 1993. Every Friday late night/Saturday morning a two hour programme is broadcast, usually between the hours of 3am and 5am UK-time (the programme was previously broadcast between Saturday late night/Sunday morning 1am and 3am, and before that, between 2am and 4am and originally midnight and 2am).

The standard format of the show is an uninterrupted guest mix of two hours provided by an invited DJ, group or producer, introduced by Tong. The mix is usually studio recorded in advance. Another Eddie Gordon initiative was to take the show on the road with live broadcasts from clubs or festivals, particularly during the Summer months (Northern Hemisphere) and at the New Year's Eve end of the calendar months. The live broadcasts started from within the UK and soon broadened out as live from Ibiza, North America, Australia, South Africa, Germany, Hawaii and other destinations in Europe including Rome in Italy.

The broadcasts from Ibiza have taken place every summer since the first Essential Mix live broadcast from Amnesia. The first ever Essential Mix from Ibiza came in the summer of 1995 Ibiza as a pre-recorded broadcast of Nicky Holloway playing live at Ku on 2 July 1995.

A State of Trance Shows

Compilations offering Complete Yearly A State of Trance Shows from Armin Van Buuren offering Trance and Progressive DJ's playing live on the show and also at Festivals and Clubs all over the World

Armin Van Buuren’s A State of Trance Radio Show has been going strong for many years. With an estimated amount of 30 million listeners, divided over 26 countries and over 40 radio-stations plus globally through satellite and internet radio-stations, ‘A State of Trance’ is one of the most popular and beloved weekly radio shows around. Armin won the award ‘Best Mix Radio Show’ at the Winter Music Conference in 2006 and 2007, and another 4 Awards at the 2008 edition. Besides that, he’s currently voted number one DJ twice in a row in the leading British DJ Mag Top 100 Poll.

Armin weekly provides trance fans with a blend of tasty new tunes, the future favourite, tune of the week and classic track. And the good thing is, it’s not just limited to trance music only. Armin: “What makes trance work so well is that it doesn’t stick to one style, and can incorporate electro, minimal, whatever it likes.” The main focus of the show will always be trance, but Armin is not being imprisoned by one style. The radioshow is the perfect way to keep track of what the trance lovers want, since the Future Favourite gets voted by the visitors of www.trance.nu, the biggest and most well-known trance community around.

The birthdays of the show are celebrated in style, with the fifth birthday being a free party at Club Asta in The Hague, the sixth birthday in Den Bosch and the seventh in Belgian super club Noxx. It was the 8th birthday and therewith the 400th episode however, that was the absolute highlight of the show so far. A 72-hour broadcast and triple celebration with events in Germany, the UK and The Netherlands formed the more than fitting celebration to this milestone in Armin’s career. A special website was set up to make sure ASOT listeners could follow the video and audio live stream, via www.astateoftrance.com. In the period of 3 days, the website had 200.000 unique visitors, tuning in from 123 different countries. All of the ASOT parties were fully broadcasted live through various other radiostations as well, giving millions of fans the opportunity to be part of the night. Once in a while, ‘A State of Trance’ also broadcasts certain live sets, with Armin’s live sets in Ibiza being the perfect example of one of them.

Every year, at the end of December, the listeners are able to vote for their absolute favourites of the show, that might end up in the ‘A State of Trance Top 20’. A week after, in the last episode of the year, Armin blends the best tunes of that year into a 2 hours Yearmix, that will also appear on a 2-disk album.

You will receive all the weekly broadcasts from that particular year on a series of DVD's but we can also combine years and send on Blu-Rays or USB Drives if you wanted. Please let us know if you preferred this.
