The story started on March 13, 1999, on the sands of Miami Beach. Founded by business partners Russell Faibisch and Alex Omes (and named after the 1997 Depeche Mode album Ultra), the inaugural festival was a one-day affair coinciding with the end of the Winter Music Conference.

• The Pioneer Lineup: Legends like Paul van Dyk, Josh Wink, and Rabbit in the Moon played to a crowd of roughly 10,000.

• The Growth: The second edition in 2000 was so successful that it became clear the beach could no longer hold the energy.

2. The Bayfront Era & The Rise of the Megastructure (2001–2010)

In 2001, Ultra moved to its spiritual home: Bayfront Park in Downtown Miami.
